What Seven Live TV Debates Taught Me About Thinking Under Pressure

A public argument needs a claim, a reason and a boundary.

The constraint

A television debate makes a useful distinction visible: having an opinion and being able to defend it are different tasks. The format limits time, invites interruption and makes imprecision public.

The structure

One workable structure is a claim, the reason for it, and the condition under which it would change. A short answer becomes more useful when the listener can see all three.

Author contribution pending

This sample outline is not a transcript or an account of a specific exchange. The final note should use one actual moment from the seven appearances, with a clip and the author’s explanation of his position.
